About me

Welcome to my new AF1 blog! Hopefully, you’ve found your way here from my other restoration project, which you can read and follow at www.mbx80.co.uk.

Back in the late ’80s, Aprilia launched the AF1 Project 108 125cc — a motorcycle like nothing else on the market. It made the Japanese models of the time look positively outdated. Over in Italy, the 125cc scene was exploding, with manufacturers competing to outdo one another with ever more exotic designs and those unmistakably cool late ’80s and early ’90s paint schemes.

I wanted an Aprilia badly. Top of my list was the black and purple Sintesi, followed by the Replica, which I almost bought. But in 1992, I finally took the plunge and purchased an AF1 Futura.

Fast forward to 2022, and the opportunity for another project came along. This time, I went for the bike I almost bought all those years ago — a 1989 Sintesi Replica. This blog documents the restoration journey of that bike.

If you’ve restored an AF1 yourself, or have any tips, information, or even parts to share, please leave a comment — I’d love to hear from you!

Update:
My Aprilia restoration was awarded Highly Commended at the 2025 Classic Motorcycle Mechanics Show in Stafford.
